Banks: a service holding on against the tide
It is still possible to rent a box at some Belgian banks, but the service is becoming scarce. The country's bank boxes were estimated at 257,000 in 2025, reports L'Avenir (in French); Febelfin, the Belgian financial sector federation, observes a steady decline in rentals, linked to document digitisation: new branches are often built without boxes.
ING Belgium stopped renting outright: no new requests from January 2022, the last vault rooms closed by the end of 2023. BNP Paribas Fortis maintains the service while acknowledging the erosion: about 34% of its boxes occupied, rentals falling by 10 to 15% a year. In both cases the principle is the same: the bank box is part of the customer relationship, reserved for the bank's own customers, RTBF reports (in French).
The national specialist agency network
Arriving in the country in 2022, the CitySafes network announces 12 branches open in Belgium, among them Brussels, Uccle, Antwerp, Ghent, Liège, Charleroi, Mons, Wavre and Kortrijk (official branch list). Leuven, Mechelen, Namur, Ostend and Verviers are announced as upcoming openings: they are not part of the open branches. The advertised entry price is €9.95 per month. Its rental conditions require "a valid European identification document and an IBAN bank account", according to its official FAQ. None of its branches is located in Mouscron or Tournai; the closest to Mouscron is the Kortrijk branch, open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Its latest opening reported by RTBF (in French) took place in Mons, in the former seat of the National Bank, whose vault room it took over.
Private vaults outside the banks
In 2012, Gold & Silver Company opened the first private safe deposit box rooms outside the banking system in Belgium. Its vault in Dottignies (Mouscron), in Hainaut, works without opening any account: showing an identity card or a valid passport is enough, with no proof of address and no bank statement, and the welcome covers every nationality, individuals and professionals alike.
The contrast with the rest of the market fits in one line: where some specialist agencies require an IBAN bank account and a European identification document, the Dottignies vault requires no account at all. Opening the contract takes twenty to thirty minutes, access to the box is immediate, and the company is a Foundry-Refinery accredited by the Royal Mint of Belgium.
